Overview
Metallised Dielectric Film is the primary raw material used in the manufacturing of Film Capacitors. These Films are produced in specialised Vacuum Metallisers that use an advanced Physical Vapour Deposition technology to coat an engineered metal layer on a Dielectric Base Film.
Meher-AM offers a wide range of high quality Metallised Polypropylene and Metallised Polyester Films of various types. The Base Films used are from globally recognised sources.
Modern metallised film capacitor technology predominantly utilises two metals: aluminum and zinc.
Due to its climatic stability, aluminum is ideal for designing robust capacitors and achieving high-resistance metallizations. Pure aluminum coatings have proven highly effective for DC capacitors and pulse applications.
Zinc-based metallizations excel in low-frequency AC applications. Since zinc does not adhere well to plastic films on its own, an initial aluminum nucleation step is essential. Typically, this involves using 5% aluminum, though the aluminum-to-zinc ratio can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

Metallised Polypropylene and Metallised Polyester Flims
Zinc-Alloy Metallisation with Heavy Edge
Zinc-Alloy Extended Heavy Edge with Aluminium Active Area
By using an extended heavy-edge in combination with high surface resistance on the free margin side, an optimal balance between minimal electrical losses and high breakdown voltage can be achieved. Suitable for DC Link Capacitors.
Aluminium Metallisation
Uniform resistance metallised layers can be produced using high-purity aluminum. Our advanced process ensures consistent metal deposition over large areas. Suitable for Capacitors requiring high voltage stability and low losses – such as Power Supplies, Energy Storage systems and various Power Conditioning circuits.
Zinc-Alloy Slope Metallisation
Slope metallisation is a technique where the metal layer on the dielectric film is applied with a gradual variation in thickness or resistance. This controlled gradient creates a precise resistance profile across the film, which is essential for minimising electrical losses and ensuring effective self-healing, thereby enhancing the Capacitor’s overall performance and reliability. Suitable for Power Factor Correction Capacitors.
Series Metallisation
Capacitors connected in series can be implemented by integrating them directly into the metallisation layer. By employing an engineered free margin pattern, it is possible to construct a compact wound capacitor element that meets even the highest voltage requirements. Suitable for DC Link Capacitors in Renewable Energy & Automotive Systems, Surge Protection and Filtering Capacitors.
Pattern / Segmented Metallisation
Capacitor films featuring a divided metallised surface are termed pattern or segmented or safety films. These intricate patterns are formed using an oil masking technique during the metallisation process. The segmented metallised areas are insulated by masked lines and connected by fuses. If there is a fault in any of the segments, the fuses blow and separate the rest of the metallised area, thereby acting as an in-built safety feature. Suitable for consumer applications such as Lighting, Fan Regulator and Appliance Capacitors.
Meher-AM also undertakes the manufacturing of Customised Profiles and Specifications on request. Our experienced R&D Team is focused on developing Specialised Films to suit future technology trends and safety requirements.
